Optician
Duties and Responsibilities:
An Optician responsibility is to fit and
dispense eyeglasses for patients based on prescriptions that were written by an
ophthalmologist or optometrists. Their duties are to help customers select
eyeglasses frames and then measure their faces to the correct frame size and
the order them. They are to also measure
the distance between the corneas of the eyes so the lenses fit properly into
the frames. Other Opticians specialize
in just making measurements in contact lens and artificial eyes. There is also the ability for opticians to
have their own store or work for an optical store. Others work in for optometrists and
ophthalmologist that sell glasses as well.
Average Salary:
$ 19,000-$40,000
Educational Requirements:
Those who are interested in choosing this career you must
have a high school diploma or GED certificate that is needed for training as an
Optician. You must also complete courses such as physics, algebra, mechanical drawing,
and geometry during your high school years. There are two types of training programs. You
can either complete a two or a yearlong in school for opticianry or can have a
job approved as a job apprenticeship.
